Distorting Outer Wall_ Multiple Digital Architecture

Digital media in architecture demands new tools and new approaches to design. In Engineering Design: Working with Advanced Geometries (2004), Charles Walker successfully presents innovative approach
to design through a design strategy that combines digital and material processes. Walker utilizes the digital media as an interesting material for architecture, which generated the concept of ‘Digital Architecture’as a type of combination of both the digital media design and architecture.

Idea
Distorting Outer Wall is a new analytical project of Distorting Mirror through digital architecture. Although the experiment by the Distorting Mirror project was limited on the advertisements in the bus stops, this project further develops the basic idea and shows that distortion
of images can be one kind of environmental elements through digital architecture. The architectural form of this project has been evolved from Multiples are an expression of the endeavor to democratize the plastic arts by means of objects. A line starting with Marcel Duchamp (ready- made “Bottle dryer” 1914) received a name “Multiples” and impetus from the Edition Multiplication d’Art Transformable (MAT), was given and shape by the Fluxus artists, popularized by pop art, expanded by Joseph Beuys for his “vehicle for the circulation of ideas” and used for the forming of “social sculptures”.

Location
A building named ‘Avatar’ has been selected in order to make over through this concept idea, which located at Myung-Dong, one of most crowded areas for culture and shopping of Seoul where this digital architecture can shows to public as reality of people's distorting images that they easily wishes for their appearance at the most commercial place.

Concept
Materials to cover buildings, which can reflect images of the building, its surroundings and people, were utilized. A sensing zone was created under the ground around the building to make the distortions of surfaces.
