Biography

Soomi Park is a multimedia artist and graphic designer. She received her BFA from Sookmyoung Women’s University and MA of Digital Media Design from IDAS (International Design school for Advanced Studies) Hong-Ik University in Seoul, South Korea. Her work encompasses a range of mediums, including interactive installations and media fashions. Most of her artwork comes from her curiosity about new types of emotional design, which are inspired by online and offline features that show the dialogue between human, the world and their connection.

Her artwork has been acclaimed by international pundits for its ingenuity. Her LED Eyelash won her Honorary Mention under the section of Interactive Art at PRIX Ars Electronica 2008. The juries said, "Soomi Park's LED Eyelash is in a category of its own-glittering, yet profound, clumsy yet extraordinarily beautiful and strange, and dealing with important issues of gender and identity with a disarming and charming sense of playfulness.". Moreover, her work has been featured by numerous online and offline media outlets such as STILUS Magazine, Domus magazine, Gizmodo, Fashioning Technology and We-Make-Money-Not-Art. Her work has been exhibited at festivals and galleries in Seoul, Incheon (South Korea), Aarhus (Denmark) and Linz (Austria) including the first her solo show,<Anxiety E(A)nd>, at Platoon Kunsthalle (Seoul, South korea), after her 9 months studio residency in there.


Soomi works at her studio Imoos+ in Seoul, South Korea, and is an adjunct professor at Dankook University, teaching fashionable technology.
 



Artist Statement

If somebody said she is media designer people start to think definitely her works are very artistic but as media designer I am, I never think this job is for the art work. I maintain that is not very artistic work because I know it is the combination of technology and design that is transmitted via media. Sometimes I’m doubting about if I am designer or technician when I got some troubles as usual between technical part and design realizing part during in the works. But in the other hand, I can say it might looks kind of art work because those are very strong points in common that is creation work which trying to new all the time and also working for get the fresh visual.

From the beginning of my design life, personally I have very specific ideas to accept it as my life which I decided enjoying my works with my own design mind and I won’t do any works which are not in my interest. Therefore I have emotional point of view for my own which I call it to “design soomi mind” making by strong energy from radiate me. It is really exciting works the media design with it and it is perfectly matched with me as well. I maintain that I enjoy my work that is always bring me into constant experiment and trying because of it cannot be even guessed the result by processes, and get the solutions by accidentally or by necessity.

New issues to give me always curiosities, my emotional part bring me into joyful pain again. This is a source of energy of “design soomi mind”, and this is the reason why I’m living as a designer at this moment also for the future as well.

I'm running my own art studio, Imoos+ ,for new trial type of media designs include digital media and interactive media design since after received my master degree of Digital Media Design from IDAS(International Design school of Advanced Studies), Hong-Ik University(Seoul, KOREA, Aug.2007).

“Imoos+” is the name of a media studio that Soomi Park is working for herself.  “Imoos+” represents Soomi’s vision for working with both interactive media design and other various design.
