2010 print ("HELLO ARDUINO"); _Workshop

Soomi and Kisoon Eom (adjunct professor of physical computing of dankook university and member of "Random Walks") assisted by Honam Kim (student of digital art at seoul institut of the arts ) are organizing a workshop for "arduino" beginners at Platoon Kunsthalle. The participants will get to know about the basics of "arduino", The use of sensors and other off-sources. this is a good occasion for those, who are generally interested in media art and in the "arduino" technique, but don´t know how to approach it in an easy and fun way. From 21 july there will be four sessions from 7 pm to 10 pm at the think tank (seminar room in the 3rd floor) for free.

Please register until the tuesday before the referring workshop day at Soomi's email : park dot soomi at gmail dot com (copy the address into your e-mail client and replace _at_ with an @ and _dot_ with a .)
The workshop is limited to 20 people. as we do not provide the technical equipment, please bring your own as given below.

4 sessions
21 july - introduction and installation of "arduino", digital input output
28 july - analogue input output
4 august - understanding and use of sensors
11 august - connection with external programs (processing, max/msp)

necessary equipment you have to bring:

- laptop (operating system is not relevant)

- 1 arduino duemilanove/328
- 1 breadboard
- 1 usb cable
- 3 led red, 3 led blue
- 2 ldr (cds)
- 10 each: resistance 220 ohm, 270 ohm, 1k ohm, 10 k ohm
- 1 variable resistor 10 k ohm
- 1 piezo (vibrate sensor and buzzor)
- 4 push buttons
- 20 jumper wire (about 15 cm)

2009 Baedari 360: Eco-Park_Media Installation

Baedari 360: Eco-Park is the archive/record of an urban intervention in the summer of 2009. This project is developed with artist Jamie Bruno since last year an exhibition titled, <Cadevre Exquis> and the website is open recently about our project. : http://baedari360.net/

Background:

Eco-Park is a park set inside of Baedari, a small historically rich community in Incheon, South Korea, relatively untouched by urban development projects since the 1950's. The space the park occupies was originally residential, however in the late 90's this block of housing was demolished and cleared for the construction of a bridge and highway. Local grievances stopped development up until 2010. Within this span of time the area was nurtured and taken care of and a natural park developed. In the last few years the park has been used as a local garden, playground, and observatory. Due to zoning issues the continued existence of Eco-Park is unsure. In late 2009 to even set foot in the park was illegal. This is when we chose to invade the park as animal construction workers.

Rock. Scissos. Paper. B.Y.O.G.B Vol.5 was a kind of event for art, dance, chat and hanging together in honik area and under ther seogang bridge,Seoul at 15th of May, 2010.
It was really nice mop which mixed with all those great art scenes toghether with lots of people.

Soomi's Swing Skirt was hanging under the seogang bridge for the very first time be shown to public after the Anxiety E(A)nd exhibition last year and LED Eyelash was also be there with her.

Thank you for Jamie Bruno who enjoyably played Swing Skirt with her even tooks some possiblity of danger to fall down. And great pictures credit to Lenny Corea, Ahopsi (Kanghee Lee) and xoxokids Chad.

2010 Workshop at Platoon Kunstalle's 1st Anniversary

Soomi will have a small workshop about " Fashion Technology" on this Friday night (09, Apr. 2010, 5 -6:30 pm ) at Platoon Kusthalle for their 1 year anniversary. The workshop is going to be composed with a lecture of Soomi's that is about very basic stuffs of media fashion and making stories for wearable media by participants.
The participants can learn the basics of fashion technology, participatory design, user centered design or some body storming. The workshop won't meant to be exhaustive understanding of media fashion but to expect participants get interested in more about it afterwards.

The clebrating events of the 1st anniversary of Platoon Kunsthalle is going on during 3 days from 8th to 10th April 2010. Swing Skirt

Idea

“Swing Skirt” is literally a skirt that can be used as a swing. It is known that the act of swinging provides a sense of stability, like a baby’s cradle, a hammock, and a swing. The work derives from a research about the influence of swinging on nervous people. Although the body is constantly responsive to stress levels, people often underestimate this fact. Mostly, people neglect physical stress, while anxiety takes its place in their heads without being consciously noticed. The skirt shows this excitement visually as it is responsive to heartbeats. The lights on the skirt reveal how the pulse changes by regaining easiness through swinging back and forth in the skirt. The “Swing Skirt” can be used anywhere where it can be hung.

Inspired by a study that claims that 96% of the worries people have are not actually threatening and therefore usless, the artist conducted her own online research in which young people expressed their anxieties.
The exhibition consists of three parts that introduce the subject of anxieties and offer a way of dealing with them. The first piece, Analog Turns, is a closed space in which visitors face anxieties people expressed online. The setting is contradictory: while reading 100 people's anxieties visitors listen to comforting sounds, being left in an ambiguous atmosphere. The media setting promises a control over the input though. Being connected to a turntable, every visitors can be a 'DJ' manipulating the pace and rhythm in which the information is shown. The second piece, Personal Camp, is the answer to the question if there is a way to avoid wasting time with useless anxieties. Soomi Park proposed a fixed space and time for pouring all worries while listening to other people’s issues. The idea is to focus on one’s worries for a limited time, a ritualization of anxiety. The third piece, Swing Skirt is a tool to finally release tension. The skirt can be attached anywhere and enables the wearer to swing. LEDs on the skirt are connected to pulse sensor and visualize the pulse rate. Based on studies dealing with the effects of swinging motions on stress levels, it reminds visitors of the bodily dimension of psychological stress.

While the three parts of the exhibition course promise a linear process of getting aware, sharing and finally releasing anxieties, the interactive processes involved are designed in a way that a certain tension becomes part of the experience. The reason for that lies in the nature of the anxieties, namely the fact that anxieties are part of quiet intimate sphere. Soomi Park’s works all explore ways of the turning them outward, making them communicable and ultimately approachable. The Analog Turns set up induces visitors to intervene into the process of being exposed to anxieties by using the turn table, in Personal Camp it is speaking and listening process and with the Swing Skirt stress levels become visible through LEDs and therefore part of viewers’ sensual experience. The tension between inside and outside is always a tension between intimacy and voyeurism, negotiating the relation between the private or public sphere of anxiety. Thus it is no coincidence that the bodily dimension is an integral part of the concept and the installation. The exhibition has to be experienced on a sensual level, in the case of the Swing Skirt the pulse rate picked up by a sensor even becomes part of the work. Idea

Is there a way of saving the time that is eaten up by 96% of useless worries? Soomi Park creates the space called ‘a private space for anxieties’. The idea behind it is that such a space could help reducing everyday worries by focusing on the ‘real’ ones. The concept of “Personal Camp” is ‘a room where you pour out all kinds of worries’. Even though “Personal Camp” is installed in an “uneasy” height ironically each person can sit in a comfortable tent and pour out his/her intimate worries and fears. Additionally, one can listen to other people’s worries and fears secretly. This is a place of confession and listening to others’ anxieties.

Idea

Analog Turns is the first part of "Anxiety E(A)nd" exhibition that is a project about pouring out worries. The audience will be confronted with the worries randomly collected from 100 people. The touch wheel presents a digital commodity, a combination of a turntable and a slide projector. The tension between comforting sounds and the images of anxiety create an awkward balance. The audience will experience a new type of a visual interaction through the unique combination of analog and digital media.

Finally, Soomi's the first solo exhibition and the second artist in residence program exhibition of Platoon Kusnthalle, Anxiety E(A)nd is close at 28th of November.
If you couldn't been this exhibition, please come and enjoy the last minute of her art works of this show.
