Swing Skirt

Idea

“Swing Skirt” is literally a skirt that can be used as a swing. It is known that the act of swinging provides a sense of stability, like a baby’s cradle, a hammock, and a swing. The work derives from a research about the influence of swinging on nervous people. Although the body is constantly responsive to stress levels, people often underestimate this fact. Mostly, people neglect physical stress, while anxiety takes its place in their heads without being consciously noticed. The skirt shows this excitement visually as it is responsive to heartbeats. The lights on the skirt reveal how the pulse changes by regaining easiness through swinging back and forth in the skirt. The “Swing Skirt” can be used anywhere where it can be hung.

Inspired by a study that claims that 96% of the worries people have are not actually threatening and therefore usless, the artist conducted her own online research in which young people expressed their anxieties.
The exhibition consists of three parts that introduce the subject of anxieties and offer a way of dealing with them. The first piece, Analog Turns, is a closed space in which visitors face anxieties people expressed online. The setting is contradictory: while reading 100 people's anxieties visitors listen to comforting sounds, being left in an ambiguous atmosphere. The media setting promises a control over the input though. Being connected to a turntable, every visitors can be a 'DJ' manipulating the pace and rhythm in which the information is shown. The second piece, Personal Camp, is the answer to the question if there is a way to avoid wasting time with useless anxieties. Soomi Park proposed a fixed space and time for pouring all worries while listening to other people’s issues. The idea is to focus on one’s worries for a limited time, a ritualization of anxiety. The third piece, Swing Skirt is a tool to finally release tension. The skirt can be attached anywhere and enables the wearer to swing. LEDs on the skirt are connected to pulse sensor and visualize the pulse rate. Based on studies dealing with the effects of swinging motions on stress levels, it reminds visitors of the bodily dimension of psychological stress.

While the three parts of the exhibition course promise a linear process of getting aware, sharing and finally releasing anxieties, the interactive processes involved are designed in a way that a certain tension becomes part of the experience. The reason for that lies in the nature of the anxieties, namely the fact that anxieties are part of quiet intimate sphere. Soomi Park’s works all explore ways of the turning them outward, making them communicable and ultimately approachable. The Analog Turns set up induces visitors to intervene into the process of being exposed to anxieties by using the turn table, in Personal Camp it is speaking and listening process and with the Swing Skirt stress levels become visible through LEDs and therefore part of viewers’ sensual experience. The tension between inside and outside is always a tension between intimacy and voyeurism, negotiating the relation between the private or public sphere of anxiety. Thus it is no coincidence that the bodily dimension is an integral part of the concept and the installation. The exhibition has to be experienced on a sensual level, in the case of the Swing Skirt the pulse rate picked up by a sensor even becomes part of the work. Idea

Is there a way of saving the time that is eaten up by 96% of useless worries? Soomi Park creates the space called ‘a private space for anxieties’. The idea behind it is that such a space could help reducing everyday worries by focusing on the ‘real’ ones. The concept of “Personal Camp” is ‘a room where you pour out all kinds of worries’. Even though “Personal Camp” is installed in an “uneasy” height ironically each person can sit in a comfortable tent and pour out his/her intimate worries and fears. Additionally, one can listen to other people’s worries and fears secretly. This is a place of confession and listening to others’ anxieties.

Idea

Analog Turns is the first part of "Anxiety E(A)nd" exhibition that is a project about pouring out worries. The audience will be confronted with the worries randomly collected from 100 people. The touch wheel presents a digital commodity, a combination of a turntable and a slide projector. The tension between comforting sounds and the images of anxiety create an awkward balance. The audience will experience a new type of a visual interaction through the unique combination of analog and digital media.

Finally, Soomi's the first solo exhibition and the second artist in residence program exhibition of Platoon Kusnthalle, Anxiety E(A)nd is close at 28th of November.

2009 Anxiety E(A)nd_ Solo Exhibition

Soomi Park will have a solo exhibition "Anxiety E(A)nd" which present her new works developed in the artist in residence program of Platoon Kunsthalle. During her studio residency she has got interest of an emotion, Anxiety, to develop her new art works.
In the exhibition “Anxiety E(A)nd” she explores the state of anxieties among young creatives in korea. Three installations provide an interactive experience that encourages visitors to face their anxieties and to find ways of dealing with them. “Anxiety E(A)nd” is another demonstration of Soomi's ability to spot urgent social issues and to approach them in a technologically advanced yet entertaining way.

The 컬mont Family presents Cadavre Exquis at Space빔(Beam). 컬mont Family is a family of friends and an international group of artists living and working in Korea. They originally formed within the abandoned neighborhood of Guemho in Seoul where they spent their summer weekends exploring, sharing, and making art.
Cadavre Exquis is French for "exquisite corpse" and originates from a Surrealist game in which players take turns writing or drawing on a piece of paper. Each player conceals their work with a fold, revealing only a tiny portion until the page is complete. For this group project, they embrace the game's historical and literal associations, replace the conceptual element of concealment with interdisciplinary collaboration, and expand the material from simple paper to the space of the city and of their friendships. All the works for this exhibition are new projects developed between the artists involved.

The컬mont Family takes specific interest in the Baedari area because of its strong sense of community and its current struggle against rapid redevelopment. Space빔(Beam) is an alternative art space located in an old rice wine brewery building on Baedari Road in Incheon, Korea. Many people call Baedari the "Mother of Incheon" since Incheon's modern history, culture, education, religion, labor, and even transportation started there.
Space빔(Beam) is trying to establish the unique identity of local culture as an alternative art space under the motto of publicity, locality, and autonomy. It intervenes in the course of production, circulation, and consumption of discourse on local art and sets the stage for open meetings and productive communications while struggling with the centralized culture & arts system.

Soomi will presenting a work "360 Eco Park" in this exhibition which collaborated with an artist, Jamie Bruno. This work will not presenting at the opening day but from 17th to 24th of October, you can see it.

Me2Day is free social networking and micro-blogging service that seems very similar with Twitter but only for Korean version that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as mechins. Mechins are text-based posts of up to 150 characters, displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive Me2 via the Me2Day website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur provider fees.

Soomi is also a Mechin of Me2Day since almost 1 and half year ago then Me2Day wanted to include short interview about Soomi's art story when Me2Day planned to blog about "PLATOON KUSTHALLE" .

Soomi was on the radio show yesterday (Thursday, 16, Apr), The Steve Hatherly Show (TBS eFM 101.3Mhz) for Artist Talk which about her new artist-in-residence program at Platoon Kusthalle and her art works.

TBS eFM is an English radio channel for foreign Seoulites and English Speak Seoulites.
And The Steve Hatherly Show is one of radio shows from TBS eFM host by Steve Hatherly which is a light hearted program that covers a wide variety of programming including great places to eat, local sporting events, debates about essential issues and loads more.

Soomi start to Artist in Residency Program at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE from this weekend to 6 months.

And in this weekend PLATOON KUNSTHALLE will open an exquisite party for celebration for official opening of them. If you have a chance to visit the Dosan Intersection (Sinsa-dong, Seoul, Korea_here is a map ), visit PLATOON KUNSTHALLE not only to see Soomi's new studio with her works but also to enjoy with brilliant opening showcases by nana, song baksa, fur/etoy corporation and brad downey also exciting party.
